After 2 weeks of insistence the number of people who got infected with COVID 19 after the vaccination with the first dose has finally been revealed: 3.500. Valeriu Gheorghiță, the coordinator of the vaccination campaign, did not mention the number of those who got infected after the booster but he said it was “very small’.
Until this moment 700.000 people have been vaccinated in Romania and 1,15 million doses have been used. If we take into consideration the number of those vaccinated only with the first dose, 243.000, then the infection rate among them is 1,44 percent. Even if the number of those vaccinated only with the first dose of the vaccine was bigger at certain moments of the infection, the percentage cannot exceed 3 percent. Which is a lot over the estimations of those at Pfizer and Moderna who indicated an effectiveness of approximately 60% after the first dose. As far as the number of infections after the second dose is concerned, Valeriu Gheorghiță said it is “very small’. If we estimate that “very small” means 10 times less people infected after the booster (454.000 fully immunized) than after the first dose, then the infection rate after using the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines is 0,08 percent. Which means an effectiveness of 99,2 percent. Obviously though, there can be unreported infection cases for objective and subjective reasons – minor symptoms or none, communication issues, etc – which would bring the vaccines closer to the effectiveness ratio resulted in clinical studies, approximately 95%.
